Will writing help you lose weight? It sounds crazy, but New York City artist and author Julia Cameron, 59, swears it's true. In her new book, "The Writing Diet: Write Yourself Right-Size" (Penguin), she argues that engaging in creative pursuits like writing can prevent overeating and describes how writing in a journal can help reveal and improve readers' relationships with food. NEWSWEEK's Karen Springen spoke with Cameron, who also wrote the best-selling book "The Artist's Way," which guides readers to becoming more creative, about how counting words instead of calories may help you shed those holiday pounds. Excerpts:

NEWSWEEK: How does writing help you lose weight?
Julia Cameron:
The bedrock tool of weight loss is writing three morning pages. These are longhand, stream-of-consciousness writings about absolutely anything that is annoying you, bugging you, vexing you or just simply capturing your attention. You become more in tune with your own needs and desires, which means that you make peace with some of your frustrations. Instead of eating, you discover what's eating you. Write in the morning about the day you're going to have. And during the day you keep a food journal of everything you eat.

How did you get this idea?
Desperation is the mother of invention. Three years ago I was put on a mood-stabilizing medicine that caused me to gain 40 pounds ... I said to myself, there must be something I can do that's going to keep me from gaining more and help me to get rid of this. I thought, I'm going to try to write my way thin.

And it worked?
Yes. I wrote morning pages every day, which keeps you from doing emotional eating. Then I kept a journal, where I jot down everything that I ate and temptations.

What were your temptations?
I live with a professional baker. I get up in the morning to the smell of gingersnaps. That has to be off limits for me. By keeping a journal, I got to watch my own rationalizations. That was very helpful. Then I threw in taking a daily walk, just to speed up my metabolism ... [And] before I ate, I asked myself four questions: Am I really hungry? Is this what I want to eat? Is this what I want to eat now? Is there anything I can eat instead? That leads you to start making smart substitutions. Instead of the piece of cherry pie, you eat strawberry Diet Jell-O, for example.

Does it matter whether you type on a computer or write on paper, from a dieting perspective?
Write longhand. It's a little bit slower than working on the computer, and you tend to become more in touch with your emotions. On the computer, you get speed and distance, but not necessarily depth.

How much weight can someone expect to lose on the "writing diet"?
I went from a [size] 16 to a 10.
A lot of people keep food and drink nearby while writing. Do you?
What you don't want to do is become a permanent grazer, where you keep potato chips in your desk ... I keep a pitcher of pure cranberry juice, mixed in water, and coffee.

What if someone isn't a writer?
Everybody can write. We just put a lot of hoopla around being a "real" writer. This diet is aimed to be able to be used by anyone.
Is there more to this than regularly writing and walking?
Planning ahead. I ask people to remember "H.A.L.T.": don't let yourself get too hungry, angry, lonely or tired. They lead to overeating. The last tip in the tool section is get a body buddy--enlisting the help and support of someone who agrees with your agenda of becoming thinner.

The idea is that if you're feeling good, you're less likely to overeat or indulge in fatty foods?
Yes. If you're feeling good, you're more likely to get out and about ... You don't have to have a big drop in pounds to have a big shift upward in self-esteem. As long as you're going in the right direction, you tend to be more energized.

Add a little prayer to that and it might just work ;)

Are ya going to try it? I'll be rooting for ya. As for me...I'll be cutting back on my consumption and adding the bowflex and maybe...adding some walking later for the cardio. Have you tried the V8 Fusion juice? I don't get a lot of fruits or vegetables during the winter, so I thought that I would try it because each 6oz glass is supposed to be the equivalent of 1serving of veggies and 1 serving of fruit...it isn't bad...almost tastes like the juice blend that we had on our vacation. I can tell you one thing...drinking one glass of that instead of eating popcorn or something else will fill you up. So...anything that is low in calories and fills me up...that would be a keeper. Let's keep each other on track. I guess in order to do that I would need to buy a scale, huh? Hmmm... ~hee hee~

The problem is I haven't owned a scale in 10 years! (and it shows!!!) I do like that juice, but need to buy some more. I have been drinking pomagranite/grape juice lately that is found in the bottled juice section too. I actually love carrot and apple juice together.

My problem is exercise. I have a gazelle and bike in the basement. I'm not an early bird and at night (I get home around 6:00) exercise gets me to wound up to sleep. If we buy a new house, it will have to be on a quiet street and not currently the death trap we live on ;)

I know...excuses, excuses...excuses. :)

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! You are about to run out of excuses! ~hee hee~

I can already tell that I'm losing inches and I am so grateful. I intend to lose 40 pounds by Christmas and keep it off. I've got an entire wardrobe that I bought last summer that I've only worn once or twice...I think that I ought to be able to get into all of it come July. So...are ya with me or not? No more excuses lady! ~grin~

Ha! I don't think I would be a good a very good partner :) But we can cheer each other on by private email. ;) :)

My mind is consumed with house hunting, etc. I basically eat one big meal a day, so my problem is exercise.

My problem with dieting is that you have to think about it. Really. My co-worker has recently lost 40 pounds and it hasn't motivated me a bit. I'm sure she would probably like me to compliment her and cheer her on, but frankly, I just never notice one way or the other. I never pay attention to people's weight.

I told her that I have other things to consume my mind with than thinking about losing weight. That part of my brain is busy writing blogs, state papers, state boosts, youth camp lessons, ss lit., etc. Ha!

So if I could healthily lose weight without thinking about it....Hey, it's a deal!!

You know how skinny people always look in the mirror and think they are fat? They always feel fat, no matter how skinny they are? I am unfortunately the opposite. I truly think and feel like I am a skinny person until I see a picture of myself or try on clothes at the store and then I laugh at the image in the mirror as apposed to the image in my mind.

My only goal is to feel better and more energetic. I'll never count pounds or inches. I'll just probably notice dress sizes and fit :)

Start eating three times a day and do smaller portions. If you need a snack...drink some V8 Fusion. Forget counting calories. Put a pedometer (?) on your shoe and see how many steps you are taking a day and increase them. Forget exercise. I think that you can handle that. I'll definitely notice small clothing sizes. My husband took a picture of me and I look REALLY ill. I've got to get the weight off so that I can be healthy. So...with or without you...I've gotta do it.

well, i had mexican food (salsa..hmmmmm) for lunch on Sunday. I guess that blows it for the day? HA!

Momma Tammi said...

Salsa is low cal...the rest isn't. ~hee hee~

I had a 2 egg omelette with two slices of bacon (big no no!) and two pieces of wheat toast, one with jelly. I was good and drank water. Considering that I had very few calories before eating that...I think I'm okay. ~giggle~

I've given consideration to journaling daily on my blog what I've eaten the day before. But that's about all I've done is consider it. HA! I'm sure it would make me be accountable, but, then I would be so embarassed when I fell off the food wagon and especially when the wagon sometimes runs over me.

Tammy Washburn said...

I've always said that chips are only the vehicle to get the salsa to your mouth besides drinking it. (uh, don't ask me how I know that ;) :) I don't really eat chips otherwise. If "brocoli" tasted good with salsa and had that satisfying "crunch" I would use brocoli. (i hate celery even tho it crunches).

Joyce: I have a "Read The Bible In A Year" journal blog that still exists, but is closed to everyone else. Because of conventions, camps, etc, I would fall off the wagon, get run over by it and finally gave that particular book format up for a while. Embarrassement finally made me close it off. I may pick back up where I left off this year and see how far I get. I did get all the way through Deuteronomy, so it should be easier from there on out :) :)

A private diet journal blog could be set up with "by invitation members" only and no one else sees it; only the participants. Small group support without the "whole world" peeking in. You can invite your friends and family to join too. I can set it up, but I probably won't be a good participant. ;) :)

Tammy--if it makes you feel any better...I got derailed on the Thru the Bible and I think that I'm finally now in August! But hey...I haven't given up and I picked up where I left off...come on girl...you can do it! Get back on the wagon with me.

As for blogging about the diet and weight loss...are you out of your ever loving mind? *mouth wide open in horror!*

Tammy Washburn said...

I think I got through March. At least you made it through August.

hahahahahahahahaha! Yeah, blogging diets doesn't sound too fun does it? The actual poundage #'s on my scale are a closely guarded secret, known only to me and never to hubby. My husband and son once playfully threatened in a grocery store to put me on the huge scale located up front by the pharmacy. I told them all the bad things I would do to them and all the things I would holler out over the store if they did. ;) :)

They decided against it :) :)
