TRESPASSES, FAULTS & OUGHTS
HOW DO WE HANDLE TRESPASSES, FAULTS & OUGHTS?
1. TRESPASS(es) - (to err, especially (morally) to sin: - for your faults, offend, sin)
FAULT(s) (unintentional) error or (wilful) transgression: - fall, fault, offence, sin, trespass
HOW DO WE HANDLE OPEN SIN?
Mat 18:15-18 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass (SIN) against thee, go and tell him his fault (SIN) between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. 18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
We are only instructed to escalate an issue if open sin has been committed and is based on facts. Also, we need to be very careful to make sure we follow the exact steps outlined in the scripture and The Church of God.
However, this is done in the spirit of:
Jas 5:19, 20 Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; 20 Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
Mat 18:21, 22 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? 22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.
When we....Jas_5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.....we would be confessing those secret sins that beset us. (ie: unintentional errors, willful transgressions, hatred, lack of forgiveness, lack of love,) 1Co_11:31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged...and there is not need for escalation for those who confess and repent.
2. OUGHT(s)– HOLDING SOME THING OR ANY THING AGAINST ANYONE
HOW DO WE HANDLE OUGHTS OR HURT FEELINGS? Ours or someone elses?
Mat 5:23-24 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; 24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.
Mar 11:25, 26 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. 26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
Oughta are based on feelings and The Bible does not instruct us to escalate the issue as in the case of open sin.
The Bible simply tells us to forgive (70x7) so that our sins may be forgiven. However, if we know or find out that we have hurt someone, we are required to go to them, not waiting for them to come to us, to reconcile and ask forgiveness. The Holy Ghost is useful in revealing these things to us.
Jas 5:9 Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door.
We want and need to have a clear channel before God especially in times of intense and immediate need.
FORGIVENESS HAS TO COME FROM THE HEART, OR IT DOES NOT COUNT.
Mat 18:32-35 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye FROM YOUR HEARTS forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.
