Walk in the light to the best of your knowledge and ability.

"Will you sincerely promise in the presence of God and these witnesses that you will accept this Bible as the Word of God believe and practice its teachings rightly divided the New Testament as your rule of faith and practice, government and discipline, and walk in the light to the best of your knowledge and ability?"

There sometimes seems to be a misunderstanding regarding the phrase found in The Church of God covenant…"walk in the light to the best of your knowledge and ability."

The misconception (and occasional rebellious notion) being that we could imagine each of us having our own unique light shining upon our own unique paths, dependent upon our own respective understandings, knowledge or abilities at any given time.

However the scriptures clearly states there is only one path to Eternal Life and unity in the Spirit.

“Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” (Ephesians 4:3-6)

So let’s study the statement: walk in the light to the best of your knowledge and ability"

Walk in the Light:
Joh 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Gal 5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Php 3:16 Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing.


To the Best of my Knowledge:

(Col 1:10) That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

(Eph 1:17-18) That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,


And (to the best of my) Ability:

(1Pe 4:11) “…if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ…

(Rom 11:29) For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.


There is no room in the Body of Christ for private interpretation of scripture:

(2Pe 1:20) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Pro 11:14 Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.


Also there is no room in the Body of Christ for self-direction.

Heb 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

(Eph 4:13) Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

Knowledge and understanding comes only by the Word of God and the Holy Ghost; not by our own intellect or feelings. Abilities are the gifts and callings that God gives us as He places each covenant member within the Body of Christ; not by our own works or measure.

The only paths of choice to walk in are Light or Darkness, the only paths are Holiness or Hell.

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. (Eph 4:11-16 KJV)
