In a marriage, it is not considered "legalistic" for my husband to expect me, his bride, to have eyes only for him. He doesn't want me be to be affectionate with another man, to spend time with another man, to gaze longingly at another man, or to dress for another man. It is not shocking, even to sinners, that fidelity and faithfulness is a requirement for a good marriage. I cannot love my husband if I love another. And I expect the same of him. We are covenanted to each other.
Then why would we expect Christ to be any different? He expects His Bride to have eyes only for him...not to be affectionate to the world, not to spend our time with the world, not to gaze longingly at the world, not to dress for the world. It should not be shocking that Jesus expects complete fidelity and faithfulness from His Bride, The Church of God. Jesus told us that we can expect the same from Him because we are covenanted to each other.
1Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
1Jn 4:19 We love him, because he first loved us.
1Jn 3:16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
